Synopsis
(All times are local, one hour ahead of GMT, except where otherwise stated). On Thursday 14th October, 2004 at approximately 15.00 hours, Mr. Francis McLaughlin set out in his 19-foot open wooden boat to go Lobster Potting from Glengad Pier in the Inishowen Peninsula, Co. Donegal. At 21.10 hours (20.10 UTC) on the 14th of October, 2004, a call was taken by Malin Head MRSC from a local fishing vessel reporting an overdue punt. A search and rescue operation was instigated. The body of Mr. McLaughlin was eventually found on rocks very close to the shore near Glengad Head at 12.25pm on the 15th of October, 2004. At the Coroner’s Inquest, which was held on the 7th of January, 2005, the cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to drowning.
